Creating homemade beauty products is a great way to save (or make money)! It provides amazing skin benefits without all the added chemicals and additives of store bought versions. Using a carrier oil in a homemade batch, is the first step to having an awesome product but what exactly is a carrier oil?
A carrier oil is a base oil that helps dilute essential oils for the body. There are many different kinds of oil with each having an amazing benefit.
How to use Carrier Oils
More than one carrier oil can be used and mixed with any essential oil of choice. Most of these products can be found at your local beauty shop or online. Amazon is a great way to save on carrier oils, but I would suggest buying essential oils from a local shop. This helps ensure the oils aren’t compromised in any way and you know exactly what you’re getting.
Common carrier oils include:
- Olive Oil
- Coconut Oil
- Cocoa Butter
- Shea Butter
- Jojoba Oil
- Sweet Almond Oil
- Apricot Kernal
Any of these can be mixed with essential oils to create just about anything. Depending on your skin type and personal needs, using carrier oils and essential oils just might be what your skin needs. To create a good mixture, be sure to dilute the essential oils in a carrier oil BEFORE placing on your skin. A good measure of unit would be a couple of drops per ounce of oil and mixed evenly. If you prefer a whipped texture, be sure to use a mixer to get the white peaks. Once completed, use as often as desired!
